Baxter Baker partner Danielle M. Vranian authored and later testified in support of a 2023 bill requiring insurance providers to provide coverage for recommended follow-up diagnostic imaging to assist in the diagnosis of lung cancer in individuals for whom lung cancer screening is recommended by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. Ms. Vranian and partner Gary R. Jones worked with a multitude of stakeholders to ensure the bill received broad support and met the needs of all Marylanders.
The bill was introduced in the House of Delegates as House Bill 815 and in the Senate as Senate Bill 965. Despite a similar California bill being dispatched in 2022 via gubernatorial veto, Ms. Vranian’s bill garnered unanimous support in both chambers, passing the Senate on March 27, 2023 and the House on April 7. Both Mr. Jones and Ms. Vranian were with Governor Wes Moore when he signed the legislation into law on May 3, 2023.
Under the enrolled bill, copayments, coinsurance, and deductible requirements for lung cancer screening and diagnosis may not exceed copayments, coinsurance, and deductible requirements for breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
